Pre-Marital/Marital/Couple - Relationship Therapy

Relationship Therapy may be for you if:
  • you are preparing for marriage, are newly married or newly committed to another and you want to create a true and lasting partnership;
  • you want to deepen an otherwise satisfying relationship;
  • you are struggling in your current relationship and want relief.
Long-term relationships go through predictable stages. Romantic love is meant to end and when it does, struggles ensue. Finding out that negative interactions have an underlying purpose and can be turned into opportunities for connection and growth is a transformative experience. Becoming conscious and connected in a relationship is an intentional act. Mature love, the ultimate stage in a relationship, is facilitated using IMAGO therapy techniques developed by Harville Hendrix, Ph.D., and his wife, Helen LaKelly Hunt, Ph.D., as described in their book, Getting the Love You Want.

In addition to regularly scheduled private couple therapy, see:  Getting the Love You Want; A weekend workshop for couples; Keeping the Love You Find; A workshop for individuals and singles; and, Overcoming Obstacles to Connection; An 8-week relationship course for couples and individuals.

Family/Blended Family/Parent Coaching

When any two or more members of a family experience difficulty in their relationship, all members experience the pain to some degree. Using a systems approach, family members work together in a supportive environment to develop skills necessary for transforming negative interactions into opportunities to re-establish connection and wholeness.

The most effective approach to family therapy urges all members of a family to participate in regularly scheduled sessions. In some cases, it is equally effective to work with both parents only. Alternatively, parents may choose to attend Connection Parenting; an 8-Week Course for Parents to learn to develop a deeper connection with their children.

Individual Therapy
Individual therapy is an opportunity to take some quiet time to nurture and support yourself. Whether you are haunted by pain from the past, struggling with current relationships, or simply wanting to take a step back to assess where you've come from, where you are and where you are going, individual therapy can give you the structure and support you need to understand the patterns of your life and to make the changes you decide are important in creating a life that truly reflects your soul.

Psychological trauma is to the human psyche what physical shock is to the body, a natural reaction to pain and injury that we experience as overwhelming. In the normal course of events, just as the body has the capacity to repair and heal itself, so, too, the mind or psyche is capable of regeneration and healing when given the opportunity to do so. Upsetting events gradually become distant memories when we feel safe and supported. All too often, however, one's psyche does not get the opportunity that it needs to heal. When this happens the brain's natural healing process is blocked, evoking a host of symptoms including:
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • low self-esteem & self-image
  • self-defeating behaviors
  • family & relationship difficulties
  • nightmares and sleep disturbances
  • flashbacks
  • loss of appetite or compulsive eating
  • overwhelming anger/grief
Trauma can come from many sources and may be recent or rooted in the distant past. Common sources of trauma include:
  • childhood abuse (physical, verbal, sexual)
  • growing up with parents who are addicted to alcohol, drugs or dysfunctional behaviors
  • death/divorce/loss of parents or siblings
  • rape/sexual assault
  • domestic violence
  • being the victim of a crime
  • car accidents
  • surgeries/serious illnesses
  • loss of job/home/numerous relocations
  • natural disasters such as floods, typhoons, tsunamis, earthquakes

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms due to a past or present trauma, want assistance in understanding the repetitive and often destructive patterns in your relationships, or simply want time to reflect on your life in the presence of a witness, a structured and supportive therapeutic environment can offer you an opportunity for the self-exploration that is often necessary for achieving a greater sense of balance and pleasure in life.

If what you feel you are currently struggling with has more to do with your intimate relationships (i.e. they seem to take on a pattern that over and over again leaves you feeling frustrated, lonely, and empty), Overcoming Obstacles to Connection; An 8-Week Relationship Course is designed to help you identify your contribution to the pattern so that you can begin to move beyond it, thus enabling you to experience growth and lasting happiness in the next relationship. Likewise, Keeping the Love You Find; A Workshop for Individuals and Singles is designed to assist you in gaining personal insight and developing relational skills to enhance your likelihood of finding and keeping lasting love.

Adolescent Therapy
Adolescence is a particularly challenging time in life where one often struggles between issues of dependence & independence, and with establishing an identity. Common indicators that suggest a level of difficulty where individual therapy may be useful include:
  • feelings of confusion
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • suicidal thinking
  • a drop in academic performance
  • a sudden change in mood/personality/behaviors/peer group
  • substance use and abuse
Navigating the course toward self-determination requires consciousness, courage, patience and understanding. It is a complex period of life to be sure and, if done well, can result in life-long skills of self-management.
